Club History

The National Centre for Chinese Martial Arts Harrogate started out, like most martial arts clubs; being run from various school and church halls. Although run and attended by passionate fans of Kung Fu, the lack of real facilities; hanging pads, soft matted floor etc meant that a dedicated space, if one could be found, would be ideal.

So, in 2006, it was great to finally have somewhere to call home. Based on the top floor of a building that was once a toffee factory gave us space to grow the club and set up home.

With a matted floor, mirrors on the walls, equipment racks, hanging pads it soon saw an increase in the number of students, and also of the number of classes we were able to run. No longer were we
running one class a week, we now had classes most nights,
expending to offer kickboxing and children’s classes.

The Gym was officially blessed in the traditional Chinese way with a lion dance, demonstrations from various Guardians from around the UK and the highlight was Master Yau, performing a blessing of the gyms Lion - used for traditional Chinese Lion dances.

From 2006-2011 the club membership increased, with more classes introduced to cater for children’s classes from as young as 4 years, mixed classes for Children and Parent to learn together, and personal training and kettlebells were added.

In late 2011 the gym moved a short distance along the road to its present home. With all the equipment needed to provide the best training environment, along with many other great facilities this new home is the best to date. We are now able to offer a place for parents and spectators to watch and relax as well as drink and food facilities all onsite.

As the club has grown, so has the number of highly skilled and trained teachers. The NCCMA now has 7 Black Sash teachers, along with assistants. The gym boasts not only trained Kung Fu teachers but also fully accredited Tai Chi, Wu Shu and Kettlebells teachers as well as being part of the Northern Dragon Lions Dance team - Multi Championship winners! The Lion dance team are available for Hire and attend many openings, Weddings and blessings throughout the year as well as performing dozens of Chinese New Year celebration in schools, restaurants and other venues all over the region. Their popularity even amongst the Chinese community in Harrogate as well as being booked years ahead for some venues is testament to their skills.
