Lion Dance Team for Hire

A multi Championship winning Lion Dance Troupe available for weddings, celebrations, Chinese New Year celebrations or just to entertain at Cultural events and schools.

During the Chinese New Year, lion dance troupes from Chinese martial artschools traditionally visited shops and houses in the community to perform the traditional custom of blessing and bestowing good fortune in thecoming year. This custom called chai ching , literally means ‘plucking the greens’, a quest by the lion to pluck the lettuce or other green vegetables and auspicious fruit like oranges tied to a (red envelope ’Hung Bao’/’Angpau’ or red packet) containing money; either hung high up or just put on a table in front of the premises.

The lion would dance around eventually approaching the lettuce like a curious cat. Puzzled by it and toying with it at first, then eventually the lion would 'eat' the lettuce before 'spitting' it out or leave it in a nice arrangement. The lion dance is believed to bring good luck and fortune to the business and the troupe is rewarded with the ‘Hung Bao’ (red envelopes).

The NCCMA/Northern Lion dance team have been performing ‘blessings’ and dances to mark Weddings, Chinese New Year Celebrations, School cultural events, fates and galas and many other events both during the busy Chinese New year season and throughout the rest of the year.

The dance troupe have competed many times and have won National competitions for 3 consecutive years. These prestigious wins, along with many pre-booked New Year booking demonstrate the unrivalled skill and dedication the Northern Dragons possess.

A basic booking would consist of a Lion (two persons), Drum, Gong and Cymbal players, but could consist of several Lions, who can interact both with the crowd and each other as they leap, jump, bounce, roll and perform other gymnastic abilities.
